paul ryan described it best when they said one of the things we're discussing is the fact that we control the house they control the white house especially following the results of the november election. >> it sounds like they're changing the tone a little bit. >> this was really important for the house republicans because they didn't do this when it came to them coming into power after two years ago when they took back control in 2010. so it helped for john boehner to get his troops in line and to get the conservative groups onboard with the budget proposal and to get that messaging across, very simple line. no budget, no pay, right? it's tweetable. it's something that they can get republicans, tea party republicans all onboard behind that and be united in a way that you haven't seen so far over the last few years. >> it's also one of the messages that will resonate with folks in this country who hear we'll stop paying them? we dislike them anyway? we should cut their pay? >> with all of the talk with republicans being in control with most of the statehouses. it's a complete nod to state

what i was struck by was paul ryan's role. telling them that they have to have a strategy. and that they have to tread carefully right nowity upcoming fights. >> one of the things that was announced the rebranding of the campaign group, obama for america, and jim messina was on, a few minutes ago to talk about the new group. it was going to work as an advocacy work to advance the president's agenda. do you think that committee will be able to successfully help the president without the president being on a ticket? >> i think that -- i think that the organization will. i think that one of the things that he is putting in place is a really amazing organizing infrastructure, be it through social media. he galvanized people to take part in the political process in a way that he has not before. so there's an opportunity to keep this base moving and working for him. >> what motivates th s thathat e another guy that he is running against, and being able to say, we may not be wild about the president, but we do not like this guy. >> it's so different when we are talking about gover

this is a big result coming out of they are retreat in williamsburg where paul ryan and others were basically indicating that they can't win this battle. >> the president's press conference, the ball in your court press conference, this is the republicans hitting the ball back over the met saying it's now in your court. we should see. can i make one other quick note? i want a whole andrea mitchell reports on old andrea mitchell footage of presidential interviews and inaugurations. that is a ratings bonanza. >> you are going to see that today, so just stay with us. >> with no shame for all of those old hairstyles as well. thank you very much. >> thank you. >> see you later. >>> a huge team, of course, has been working overtime on the inaugural weekend plans leading up to president obama taking the oath of office. stephanie cutter chairs the inaugural committee board of directors and joins me now. thank you very much. wow. you have coming right out of the campaign you have taken this on. this is the most complicated management project. first of all, let's talk about the day of service on saturd

ryan in the house. seeing a build between the house and republicans, between the house republican, excuse me, and the senate democrats, on immigration reform. that's a ticket item we could definitely see him pass. >> house republican, senate democrats. here's the deal, amy. when the president started out four years ago, he controlled, democrats had control of both houses. so how much does that change his approach to trying to check off this wish list? it's not that way anymore. >> no, it's not. compromise is the name of the game. he's seeing that republicans want to compromise on certain issues. with gun control, you're hearing certain republicans talk about background checks. a willingness to do that, also some parts of immigration. i don't know if it's going to be some grand, sweeping deal, but, you know, republicans suffering a loss with the hispanic vote want to see that happen. i think if they can find middle ground on these issues he can have a successful term. >> if not now, gun control, lauren,

yet paul ryan yesterday coming out and as a leader sort of talking about we may need to be more accepting of the fact that we only control the house. we don't have the white house or the senate. can republicans do anything in the context of the debate -- the fiscal debates we're in now to improve their brand, to improve their standing? >> i think with the middle, they could. the problem, though, is, mark, you know, so they hit their all-time low or high, however you want to characterize this number. it's the worst negative rating we've ever actually recorded for the republican party. but it was republicans. it's republicans who have now a more negative view. there's still more republicans that have a positive view than negative view, but it is core republicans who are upset with the party. so you have to ask yourself, if you're the republican party, who do you win back first, and how do you do it? so if they did a big grand bargain, their favorable ratings would jump a lot with a bunch of voters who may not ever support who they are. that's sort of the political box that i've heard that h
